10 Critical things to perfect for effective requirements management.

Steve Erlank, MD of The Faculty Training Institute and Acting President IIBA-SA

It is widely accepted that proper requirements management provides a better quality of solution. Yet, in many companies requirements management is not practiced, and even when it is, the quality of the requirements themselves is often poor. It is not uncommon for badly written requirements specifications to be misunderstood, or even largely ignored by systems analysts and developers, with disastrous consequences for projects.

The talk will present an overview of effective requirements management, and highlight common weaknesses and pitfalls that exist in the requirements process. Key concepts that underpin effective requirements, such as traceability, granularity and discreteness will be discussed. Steve will describe the 'perfectly-specified requirement' and provide an understanding of a few critical things that need to be in place if we are to extract full value from our requirements efforts.
